Stonelaw High School

Welcome to the Faculty of Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts Faculty consists of Art & Design, Drama and Music.

The Expressive Arts play a vital role in enabling young people to enhance their creative talent and develop their artistic skills. By engaging in the experiences within the Faculty, pupils will recognise and represent feelings and emotions, both their own and those of others. Faculty staff encourage pupils to develop an appreciation of our personal, social and cultural identity.

All aspects of learning in expressive arts include opportunities to present and perform, for example through preparation of artwork for display, presentation of a short improvised drama to members of the class or performance of dance or music to parents or in the community. At third level, as a culmination of learning within their broad general education each young person should have the opportunity to contribute to a significant presentation (such as an exhibition) or performance in at least one area of the expressive arts.

Faculty staff endeavour to provide a wide range of artistic experiences through working with arts professionals and developing links with local, regional and national arts organisations. Many opportunities are provided for pupils to experience visits to Art, Drama and Music based work throughout. In addition, there are a multitude of extra-curricular Expressive Arts based activities.

Learning through the expressive arts enables children and young people to:
express themselves in different ways and be creative
experience enjoyment (and contribute to other people’s enjoyment) throughcreative and expressive performance and presentation
develop important skills specific to expressive arts and also transferable skills
develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values, identities and ideasand, for some, prepare for advanced learning and future careers by building
foundations for excellence in the expressive arts.
